I left my motorcycle at a friend’s house and took a tourist bus to Palenque archeological site. Our bus was stopped by a protest blocking the road and we were told there was no way through unless we walked and figured out how to go the rest of the way on our own. Everybody on the bus was pissed off and complaining to the driver and demanding their money back. We waited for an hour to see if the protesters would let us through. It looked as if there was no other way but to turn back so the everybody boarded and the bus driver started the engine. In the last minute I asked this girl who I met 10 minutes earlier if she would want to come with me to try our luck crossing and figuring out how to get to the pyramids on our own. She hesitated for a second while the bus driver told us to get in. Everybody was waiting for us. I could tell she was scared and she had no reason to trust me to stay with her but she took a leap of faith. We promised to stick with each other because it was unsure if we’d make it back to San Cristobal that night or have enough money for buses. The risk was very worth it. We spent a beautiful day talking like old friends while walking among the ruins of an ancient culture.
